Discord Launches New End-to-End Encryption For Audio And Video Calls

JAKARTA - Discord launched a new end-to-end (E2EE) encryption for audio and video calls, including for calls from DM, DM group, voice channel, and Go Live streaming on its platform.

With this new encryption capability, you will be able to confirm when the call is encrypted thoroughly and verify other members in the call.

"Discord is committed to protecting the privacy and data of about 200 million people using our platform every month," wrote Stephen Birarda, a software technician for Discord, in a blog post quoted Wednesday, September 18.

The company also explained that there are several goals they want to achieve with this new E2EE technology, namely to provide a more private conversation experience, so that no one but participants can access the conversation.

Furthermore, Birarda also said that on the other hand, private messages, would not be fully encrypted. So, only audio and video calls.

"Security is closely related to our products and policies. While audio and video will be fully encrypted, messages in Discord will continue to follow our content moderation approach and are not fully encrypted," he added.

Lastly, Birarda also announced that they would release a paper on its encryption protocol, which he said had been reviewed by cybersecurity consulting firm Trail of Bits, and made the source code open.
