Anies Worried That Baleg Akali's Maneuvering Will Be The Constitutional Court's Decision: Indonesian Democracy Is Back At A Crucial Intersection

JAKARTA - Anies Baswedan admitted that he was worried about the process of revising the Law on Regional Head Elections which was being discussed at the DPR Legislation Body.

The DPR Baleg Working Committee did not comply with the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) in case number 60/PUU-XXII/2024 regarding the overall threshold for nomination of regional heads.

"Indonesia's democracy is again at a crucial intersection," said Anies on his personal social media account, @aniesbaswedan, Wednesday, August 21.

Anies reminded that the fate of democracy today is determined by members of the DPR because each of them holds the vote of hundreds of thousands of Indonesians.

"Mrs/Mayors of the party carry the same opportunities and responsibilities at this time," said Anies.

Anies hopes that there will still be representatives of the people who think clearly and have the heart to return the Indonesian constitution and democracy to its tracks, according to the ideals of reform.

"Hopefully every time they become a part that is well recorded in the history of the nation's journey," said Anies.

Indonesian democracy is again at a crucial intersection. The fate is determined today by the ladies and gentlemen of the people in the DPR, each of which holds the vote of hundreds of thousands of Indonesians. The head of the party carries the opportunity and responsibility...

On Tuesday, August 20, the Constitutional Court issued case decisions number 60/PUU-XXII/2024 and number 70/PUU-XXII/2024.

In its decision, the Constitutional Court changed the threshold for nominating regional heads in the regional elections. The Constitutional Court allows parties to not have seats in the DPRD to participate in carrying regional head candidates, as well as reducing the amount of the nomination threshold.

From the decision of case number 60/PUU-XXII/2024, there is an opportunity for PDIP to carry regional head candidates without a coalition, especially in Jakarta.

Suddenly, the Working Committee (Panja) Baleg DPR RI scheduled a discussion meeting on the revision of the Pilkada Law. It didn't take long for the DPR to decide to follow up on only a part of the Constitutional Court's decision.

Where, the Panja agreed to the threshold for new nominations from the Constitutional Court's decision but only applies to non-parliamentary political parties or those who do not have seats in the DPRD.

Meanwhile, the Panja does not allow this new rule to be applied to political parties that already have seats, so they still refer to the old provisions, namely at least 20 percent of the number of DPRD seats or 25 percent of the valid votes acquired.

If referring to this, PDIP still cannot carry the candidates for Governor-Deputy Governor of Jakarta alone because the votes and seats in the 2024 Jakarta DPRD legislative election do not meet the threshold. Anies is also threatened that PDIP cannot carry him in the Jakarta gubernatorial election.
