Kayu Ship In Nigeria Burns And Explodes, 20 People Died

JAKARTA - Reportedly 20 people died when a wooden boat caught fire and exploded in a river in the Nigerian coast of Bayelsa.

Bayelsa police spokesman Musa Muhammed said the boat was carrying traders carrying goods to coastal communities.

Reported by Reuters on Thursday, August 8, traders travel weekly between coastal settlements and the state capital of Yenagoa.

According to records, 200 people were reported killed in a ship crash in Nigeria last year.

Authorities often blame poor population density and maintenance.
