Japanese Earthquake, A Wave Of 50 Cm In Miyazaki Appears, There Have Been No Reports Of Major Damage

JAKARTA - There have been no reports of major damage caused by earthquake shocks measuring 7.1 (concluded from initial data on magnitude 6.9) that hit southwest Japan.

The Japan Meteorology Agency (JMA) reported that there was no disruption to nuclear power plants after the earthquake.

"Currently the government is examining the damage and casualties," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.

An earthquake in Japan occurred off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on the big western island of Kyushu.

In Miyazaki, waves as high as 50 cm (20 inches) have been seen, said the NHK public broadcaster. The Japanese earthquake previously triggered a tsunami warning.
