Fire Inwakit Binondo Manila Kills 11 People

JAKARTA - It was reported that 11 people died in a fire in a five-story building in thekunci area of the Philippine capital, Manila.

The fire in Binondo district was successfully extinguished about three hours after firefighters were alerted at around 7.30 am, Friday, August 2, local time. There is no information about the cause of the fire.

The building's wife was among those killed, Nelson Ty, the elected official to the DZRH radio station, reported by Reuters.

He said traders used the building to store their belongings at night.

The Philippines has a poor record of implementing fire safety in buildings, homes and offices.

Sixteen people died in fires in buildings and warehouses in August last year. Meanwhile, heavy fires hit the historic Central Post Office building in the capital in May 2023.

In 2017, a fire in a shopping center south of Davao City killed 37 call center agents and a security officer.
