2024 President's Cup: Thin Win Over Persib, Borneo Make Sure To Semifinals

JAKARTA - Persib Bandung met Borneo FC in the second match of Group A of the 2024 Presidential Cup at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Monday, July 22, 2024.

Appearing in front of their own supporters was not an advantage for Maung Bandung. They even lost to Pesut Etam with a narrow score of 0-1.

Borneo's only goal was scored by Berguinho in the 90+2 minute.

Persib could actually press Borneo in the first half. Opportunities have been created through Marc Klok's free kick in the second minute.

However, Nadeo Argawinata was still quick to parry the ball. Wild ball to the left then still secured by Persib players who immediately released the hull cross.

David da Silva, who was without tight guard, managed to head home the ball, but still bounced.

Six minutes later it was Dimas Drajad's turn to get free of charge. He took advantage of the chaos in front of Borneo's goal.

Again, Nadeo carried out a brilliant rescue by blocking Dimas' close-range shot.

Borneo then managed to finish from the right. They were able to dominate possession, but always failed to dismantle Persib's defense.

The shot into the first goal can only be produced in the 37th minute through Berguinho. He fired hard from outside the penalty box, but Kevin Mendoza was caught.

Pesut Etam turned to spread threats for Maung Bandung in the remaining time. They almost opened the scoring in the first half of injury time through Christophe Nduwrugara's strong header.

However, his header took advantage of Stefano Lilipaly's free kick still soaring. The first half ended 0-0.

Continuing to the second half, Borneo took the lead again in possession of the ball. In total, they packed 66 percent of the ball which resulted in 10 shots.

While Maung Bandung actually had more opportunities. Even though they both fired 10 shots, they were able to score four shots on target.

However, Persib's solid defense was a problem for Borneo. Their attacks often cut off before entering the final third of the opponent's territory.

Final settlement is also a problem. Luckily, the goal they were waiting for finally arrived.

Only in the second half of injury time, Borneo broke the deadlock. H. A. Jusuf's acceleration to the penalty box ended with a cut-back pass.

Berguinho was waiting at the mouth of the goal which immediately cheated on the ball ahead of Persib defender. The goal became Pesut Etam's winning goal.

An additional three points made Borneo FC ensure themselves to the semifinals of the 2024 President's Cup. They are at the top of Group A with six points from two matches.

Previously, Borneo won the first three points when he beat Persis Solo 2-0.
