Indonesian Game Player Capai 174.1 Million In 2022, But Small Domestic Market Contribution

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) said the number of game players in Indonesia reached 174.1 million people in 2022.

This figure also reached around 63 percent of the total population of Indonesia, which was 275 million people in the same year.

However, this number is not proportional to the national game market in Indonesia itself.

The Adyatama of Tourism and Creative Economy, the Main Expert of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Nia Niscaya, said that local games only control 0.5 percent of the game market in Indonesia.

"The game market in Indonesia is still dominated by global players and local games only control 0.5 percent of the game market in Indonesia. It's very small, yes," Nia said at The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno in Jakarta, Monday, July 15.

Nia assessed that so far Indonesia has only been a market for the entry of games from abroad, aka unable to host in its own country.

"We are really in the market," he said.

Not only that, Nia said, until now the domestic game industry is still facing various problems such as, facilities are not optimal and also inadequate financing aspects.

The government, he continued, has issued Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 19 of 2024 concerning the Acceleration of National Game Industry Development which aims to encourage the development of the domestic game industry through a number of main programs.

One of them is the promotional improvement program and the opening of access to the national game market.

"To help promote and open market access for national games and welcome Indonesian Game Day on August 8, 2024, the Ministry of Trade is working with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to organize #AyoHARGAI, a lively Indonesian Game Day event," he said.

With this event, it is hoped that the domestic game industry can host in their own country and penetrate the global market in the future.
