Alcaraz And Sinner Stay On Wimbledon Meeting Route, Gauff Eliminated

JAKARTA - Defending champion Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz and world number one Jannik Sinner remain on track for a meeting at Wimbledon after the two reached the quarter-finals. While the second seed, Coco Gauff, was eliminated on Sunday 7 July.

French Open Champion Alcaraz, who wants to defend Wimbledon's trophy and complete what is referred to as "Channel Slam" refers to the British Strait separating Britain and France, struggling through Ugo Humbert who was born in Metz with a score of 6-3 6-4 1-6 7-5.

"I think I'm getting better every game I play," said Alcaraz, who was happy to be able to avoid another five-set game after being challenged to five sets by Frances Tiafoe in the previous round. "I feel very comfortable on the pitch and play good points, good shots."

The 12th seed from America, Tommy Paul, will meet the 21-year-old Spaniard in the last eight after the Queen's Club champions beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 7-6(3) 6-2.

Italian tennis player Sinner, who was able to face Alcaraz in the semifinals in their rematch at Roland Garros, impressed equally in the 6-2 6-4 7-6(9) victory over 14th seed Ben Shelton.

"I'm happy with how I'm dealing with this situation," said Sinner, who managed to neutralize the great service of the aggressive American player. "It's definitely very difficult to play against him, one of the best servers we have on tour, a very aggressive player."

"I'm happy with the way I returned the ball today. Yes, I think that's one of the keys to today's victory," he said.

The 22-year-old will meet fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, who he defeated in January to win his inaugural Grand Slam title in Open Australia. Russian tennis player Medvedev advanced after the 10th seed from Bulgaria, Grigor Dimitrov, withdrew from their 5-3 draw.

Sinner's compatriot, Jasmine Paolini, also advanced thanks to her opponent's injury, when Madison Keys, who was in tears, withdrew at a 5-5 position in the determination set because she was suspected of having a groin problem.

"I hope he recovers soon. We played a very good game. Of course, it's not easy to end up like this," said Paolini. "But I have to say that some of myself are happy to be in the Wimbledon quarter-finals."

There was disappointment for British fans because of their last hope, Emma Raducanu, was eliminated by the 123-ranked qualification player, Lulu Sun, who sealed a 6-2 5-7 6-2 victory over the 2021 US Open champion.

Defending champion Flushing Meadows, Coco Gauff, is also no better because she was beaten 6-4 6-3 by fellow American and 19th seed Emma Navarro.
