BMKG Reveals Reasons For Heavy Rain Even Though The Dry Season

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that the reason for the recent rain has often occurred in a number of areas in Indonesia. In fact, the peak of the dry season in most parts of Indonesia occurred in July and August 2024.

BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto confirmed that most areas in Indonesia have entered the dry season. He explained that rain in the dry season is not impossible.

"That's right, most parts of Indonesia occurred in July and August 2024, which was 77.27%. Around 63.95% of the duration of the dry season is predicted to occur during 3 to 15 bases. However, this does not mean that in the dry period there will be no rain at all, but there will be rain, even though the range is below 50 mm/based," explained Guswanto, quoted from his official statement, Sunday, July 7.

Guswanto revealed, in the next week there is still the potential for a significant increase in rainfall in a number of parts of Indonesia.

This phenomenon is caused by significant regional-global-scale atmospheric dynamics. Among other things, the activity of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon, the Kelvin and Rossby Equatorial waves in most parts of Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku Islands, and most of Papua.

In addition, the warm sea level temperature in the waters of the area around Indonesia contributes to providing conditions that support significant rain cloud growth in Indonesia.

"This phenomenon of the atmosphere triggers the dynamics of the weather which results in the rain in most parts of Indonesia," he explained.

Meanwhile, Head of the BMKG Public Meteorology Center Andri Ramdhani predicts that the combination of the influence of these weather phenomena will cause the potential for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning or strong winds in most parts of Indonesia on July 5-11, 2024.

The areas in question are Sumatra Island, Java Island, Kalimantan Island, Sulawesi Island, Maluku Island, and Papua Island.

Andri appealed to the public to be aware of the possibility of rain that could cause flooding and landslides. Mainly people who live in hilly areas, highlands and along watersheds.

"While it is still raining, it would be better to use it to save water. Save and use water wisely so that it has water reserves when the peak of the dry season hits our territory later," he added.
