BPBD Jakarta Asked To Anticipate Disasters Due To Extreme Weather At Prone Points

JAKARTA - Member of Commission A of the DKI Jakarta DPRD Israyani asked the DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to anticipate disasters due to extreme weather. Given, heavy rains have continued to pour on Jakarta in the last few days.

Israyani is worried about the potential for disasters, especially in residential areas around the river. Therefore, the placement of officers to be on standby is important for the safety of residents.

"This weather is uncertain, I ask BPBD to start alerting officers at disaster-prone points in Jakarta," said Israyani in his statement, Sunday, July 7.

According to him, the threat of hydrometeorological disasters on the banks of the river during extreme weather is not only floods, but also landslides. Because landslides often occur when it rains in Jakarta and cause the soil to be softer.

"Well, the soil can also soften because it rains continuously. It needs to be watched out for those who live on slopes or in landslide-prone areas," said Israyani.

"The disaster always leaves losses. If we are alert, God willing, more and more people can be saved," he added.

Previously, the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said that the peak of the dry season in most parts of Indonesia occurred in July and August 2024. However, rain still often occurs in many regions in Indonesia.

Dwikorita said, in the next week, there is still the potential for a significant increase in rainfall in a number of parts of Indonesia. This phenomenon is caused by the dynamics of the regional to global scale atmosphere which is quite significant.

It was observed that there were activities of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon, the Kelvin and Rossby Equatorial waves in most parts of Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku Islands, and most of Papua.

In addition, the warm sea level temperature in the waters of the area around Indonesia contributes to providing conditions that support significant rain cloud growth in Indonesia.

"This phenomenon of the atmosphere triggers the dynamics of weather which results in rain in most parts of Indonesia," said Dwikorita.

The combination of the influence of these weather phenomena is predicted to cause the potential for rain with moderate to heavy intensity accompanied by lightning / strong winds in most parts of Indonesia on 5-11 July 2024.
