Australian PM Calls UK New PM Keir Starmer, Talks About Economy To AUKUS

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had spoken with British new Prime Minister Keir Starmer after a landslide victory by the Starmer Labor Party in the general election.

"We have a lot to do together as we grow the economy, advance AUKUS, and take advantage of opportunities for global environmentally friendly energy transformation," Albanese wrote on X referring to the country's defense partnership with the US.

Albanese, leader of the Australian Labor Party, said conversations also discussed conflicts in the Middle East and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As previously reported, in his speech PM Starmer said Britain chose "firmly for the change and return of politics to public services."

"When the gap between the sacrifices made by the people and the services they receive from politicians grows this big, it causes fatigue in the hearts of a nation, draining hopes, enthusiasm, confidence in a better future, which we need to move forward together," said PM Starmer, reported by CNN, Friday 5 July.

This wound, said Starmer, "can only be cured with action, not words."

He intends to immediately start working "with a simple recognition, public services are a privilege and this government should treat everyone in the country with respect."

Closing his speech, PM Starmer promised to direct the UK towards a "silenter waters" after the 14-year Conservative government that has often been volatile.

"If I asked now if you believed that Britain would be better for your children, I knew many of you would say no," he said, pledging to fight "until you believe again."
