Encourage Sustainability, Samsung Reduces Electronic Waste And Expands Renewable Energy

JAKARTA Samsung, an electronics company from South Korea, released the 2024 Sustainability Report on June 28. The report noted various Samsung efforts in achieving net zero emissions. In accordance with the New Environment Strategy created in 2022, Samsung will achieve Scope 1 and 2 net zero emissions by 2050. Scope 1 is an internal emission from the company, while Scope 2 comes from an energy plant. In line with this strategy, Samsung's Division of Device eXperience (DX) has converted 93.4 percent of renewable energy at the end of last year. The company converted energy from manufacturing facilities in the US, Europe, Korea, China, Brazil, India, and Vietnam. The DX Division has also expanded its program of recovery and recycling of electronic waste (e-waste) to more than 70 countries. In addition to DX, sustainability efforts were also made by the Device Solutions (DS) division in Samsung.

The division has installed a new processing gas processing facility that uses a generating catalytic system and expanded the use of a liquefied natural gas waste (LNG) heat recovery system. These two efforts were made last year. DS also expands the use of renewable energy, just like DX. This division has signed a 60 megawatt solar power plant purchase agreement in South Korea to supply renewable energy. Thanks to DS and DX support, Samsung managed to experience a decline in Scope emissions of 1 and 2 to 11.6 percent by the end of last year. According to Samsung, this percentage is much better than in 2022.
