Russian Satellite 'Explodes' In Space, ISS Astronauts Take Shelter

JAKARTA - Russian satellites reportedly 'exploded' into debris in orbit overnight. This incident forced astronauts at the International Space Station to take cover.

There are no details regarding the cause of the outbreak of Russia's Earth RESURS-P1 observation satellite, which was deactivated in 2022.

The incident occurred in orbit near the International Space Station (ISS), which caused US astronauts on board to take shelter on their spacecraft for about an hour, NASA's Space Station office said.

US radar detected the satellite releasing debris clouds in low-Earth orbit on Wednesday, June 26 evening and Thursday morning, space tracking company LeoLabs said.

US Space Command said satellites were broken into more than 100 pieces of traceable debris

"USSPACECOM has not observed any direct threats and continues to carry out regular conjunction assessments to support the safety and sustainability of the space domain," the Space Command added in a statement.
