Elon Musk Predicts 10 To 20 Percent Of Global Disaster Opportunities By AI
JAKARTA - Elon Musk, a tech billionaire who invests billions in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), expressed his concern about the potential danger of the technology. In a statement at the Cannes Lions International Creativity Festival, Musk predicts there is a '10 to 20 percent probability' scenario in which AI will destroy humanity.
However, Musk also invites people to keep thinking positively despite the risk of collapse. "The glass is 80% full. Look at the bright side," Musk said.
Musk, who has long been a critic of AI, has often said that uncontrolled development could lead to the destruction of mankind. This time, Musk reiterated his views. "I tend to agree with Geoff Hinton one of the founders of AI and he thinks there is a 10-20% chance something terrible will happen," he said, quoted by VOI from DailyMail.com.
Musk had previously warned that AI could be 'one of the greatest threats to mankind'. Even so, he also argues that the potential benefits of AI outweigh the risks.
Musk believes that the most likely outcome is abundance, where goods and services are available to everyone, making work optional. However, he also warned that this could lead to an 'existent crisis' for mankind. "If AI can do all you can but better, what's the point of doing something? I think there will be an existential crisis," he added.
Despite predicting a terrible scenario, Musk suggested that people remain optimistic. "We live in the most exciting times in history and we have to 'enjoy the journey'," Musk said.
Despite seeing AI as an existential risk, Musk continues to invest in AI projects such as xAI and robotic systems such as Tesla Optimus. xAI, launched by Musk, aims to create an AI chatbot called Grok. In June, xAI completed its initial funding round with 6 billion US dollars, bringing its total valuation to 24 billion US dollars.

Controversy and Commitment
Musk also faces a lawsuit from several Tesla shareholders claiming that he deliberately transferred talent and resources to Tesla's xAI. However, Musk remains committed to making X a speech freedom platform, although this has led to a decline in the platform's market value by more than 70 percent since he took over in 2022.
Despite the challenges, Musk continues to push for boundaries of technology and free speech, inviting all of us to enjoy the journey in this time full of possibilities.
