Lots Of Goalprint Opportunities, Koeman: The Netherlands Should Have Won 4-1
JAKARTA - Dutch coach Ronald Koeman said that the Orange Team should have won 4-1 over Poland in the first match of Group D of the 2024 European Cup in Hamburg, Sunday, June 16 local time.
However, Koeman regretted that his team wasted too many chances so they only won with a narrow score 2-1 through goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst. Poland could steal one goal through Adam Buksa's header.
"We should have won 4-1 after an hour. We played very well but were unable to score many goals," Koeman said as reported by ANTARA after the match.
"This time we should have scored four goals in an hour and that's the difference. If we score, you'll say we're on the same level as Germany," said the former Barcelona and Everton coach.
"But we were lucky to score a second goal. I think this final result increases our confidence," said Koeman.
In the next match, the Netherlands will face France on Friday 21 June and Austria on Tuesday 25 June. However, Koeman declined to comment on the two matches because they were still focused on evaluating the first match against Poland.
"I haven't thought about the next line-up yet, it's strange to think about it, we just finished this game," Koeman said.
On the other hand, the Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo who scored for the Netherlands in tonight's game believes the match against France won't be easy.
