Floods Hit Mimika Regency, 495 Affected Families

JAKARTA - The flood inundated Iwaka District, in Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, on Monday. At least two villages, namely East Limau Asri Village and Iwaka Village in the district, were also affected by flooding caused by high-intensity rain that flushed the Mimika Regency area.

"Based on the report received by BNPB, as of Friday, June 14, the flood was observed to be receding. However, the incident had an impact on 495 families or 2,088 people," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in his statement, Friday, June 14.

The Mimika Regency BPBD has dispatched a Rapid Response Team (TRC) to carry out emergency response at the location. The handling carried out includes coordinating with village officials, evacuating residents, setting up evacuation tents, and distributing logistical and food assistance in the form of ready-to-eat food.

Until this press release was released, from the monitoring of the local BPBD team in the affected areas, it showed that the flood with a water level of 20 to 50 centimeters gradually receded, on Friday (14/6). However, in addition to being on standby, BPBD and the joint team began to clean up post-flood materials in mutual cooperation with residents.

In order to anticipate the potential for flooding that has occurred again, BPBD through the village apparatus network gives an appeal to residents to increase their vigilance and prepare to evacuate independently if it rains with high intensity and a long duration occurs again.

Based on weather forecasts, the Mimika Regency area from noon to evening will be hit by light rain with wind speeds of 20 km/hour, and air temperatures ranging from 26 degrees Celsius to 31 degrees Celsius.
