Indonesia Enters The Dry Season, BMKG Reminds Extreme Weather Still Lurking

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned that there is still potential for extreme weather, although some regions in Indonesia have entered the dry season, particularly in the territory of Indonesia south of the Equatoriality.Deputy for Meteorology of BMKG Guswanto said, in some areas that are still in the transition period of seasons, water vapor content, and atmospheric lability are still high. This condition triggers significant rain cloud growth. So there is still the potential for increased rainfall in several parts of Indonesia until the end of this week. The atmospheric dynamics affecting this condition, including the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon, cyclonic circulation patterns, Rossby and Kelvin equatorial waves, as well as the formation of bend areas and wind slowdown. "Commbination of these phenomena is predicted to cause moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several parts of Indonesia until June 9, 2024," said Guswanto in his official statement, Thursday 6 June. Moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is predicted to occur until June 9, 2024 in parts of western Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, North Maluku, Maluku, and Papua.

BMKG also reminded the public, especially those living in areas prone to hydrometeorological disasters, to be aware of the potential for extreme weather, even though most parts of Indonesia have entered the dry season. Extreme weather can cause flooding, flash floods, landslides, rain lava floods, slippery roads, fallen trees, to reduced visibility.
