BMKG: 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake In Jailolo, West Halmahera Triggered By Maluku Sea Plate Deformation

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that the deformation activity of Maluku sea plate rocks triggered the tremors of the earthquake in Jailolo, West Halmahera, North Maluku, Sunday afternoon (2/6/2024).

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in Jakarta, Sunday, said the type of earthquake was a medium tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 and centered at sea with a depth of 222 kilometers at a distance of 30 kilometers southwest of Doi Island, North Maluku.

Apart from Jailolo City, the impact of the tremors was also felt for a while in the Islands Loloda, Tobelo City (intensity scale III - IV MMI) to the cities of Daruba, Ternate, and Tidore (intensity scale II- III MMI).

Based on the results of the analysis of the seismologist for the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System BMKG team, it was found that there was a thrust fault mechanism in the Maluku plate.

However, he stated that this earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami and BMKG had not yet received reports of damage caused by the earthquake.

"Likewise, until 16.35 WIB, it has not shown any aftershock activity," he said.

BMKG hopes that the public can remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified, apart from the results of the analysis by the BMKG.

The results of this analysis are usually obtained by the public by accessing the online application infoBMKG, social media infoBMKG, or can directly contact the nearest BMKG office.
