Death Toll Due To Flash Flood Strikes In Afghanistan Reaches 153 People

JAKARTA - The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Afghanistan has risen to 153 people in three provinces, the Taliban interior ministry said.

It was reported that 138 people were also injured in floods in northern Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan, caused by heavy rains on Friday, May 10, ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qaniee said.

Taliban authorities sent helicopters to try to help civilians overnight after receiving reports that more than 100 people were stranded.

"The impact is enormous, causing loss of life and injury. Many people are still not found," the WHO office in Afghanistan said in a statement.

Four health centers were reportedly damaged and one destroyed by the flood.

WHO sent a health team to provide care in flooded areas.
