Bitfinex Denies Hacker Hacked Platform, CTO Emphasizes Importance Of Data Security
JAKARTA - Recently, social media was filled with claims about major hacking on the Bitfinex crypto exchange. The attack allegedly carried out by the "FSociety" group has investors worried, with reports stating that 2.5 terabytes of data and personal details of more than 400,000 users were stolen.
However, the news turned out to be wrong. Paolo Ardoino, Bitfinex Chief Technology Officer (CTO), confirmed that after a thorough examination, "Bitfinex users' list is safe". This clarification makes users relieved, as well as an important reminder of data security in the digital world.
Bitfinex Clarification
The wave of misinformation seems to have started with Alice's tweet from Shinoji Research. This deleted tweet, shared by Walter Bloomberg, claims there was a massive data breach in Bitfinex based on information from FSociety. This claim was later overestimated by a well-known news media, exacerbating the situation.

Shinoji Research kemudian mengakui kesalahannya, menjelaskan bahwa FSociety kemungkinan menyusun daftar kredensial login dari pelanggaran sebelumnya, bukan dari Bitfinex.
"They then make the site look like a ransom request for a big violation," explains Alice. This tactic underscores growing concerns in the field of cybersecurity - the use of data stolen from previous violations for phishing attacks.
Ardoino took advantage of this opportunity to emphasize important points that crypto users often ignore: "Unfortunately, many users use the same email/code address on many services, including crypto exchanges."
This behavior triggers a domino effect, where one security breach on a single platform can reveal user vulnerabilities on various accounts.
