Heating Up In Intan Jaya, Papuan Police Chief Orders Strengthening Security

INTAN JAYA - In the past week, the security situation in Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua has heated up. Armed criminal groups (KKB) carried out a series of acts of terror, including attacks on Hoyame Police, shooting civilians, and burning elementary school buildings.

Responding to this, the Papuan Police Chief Inspector General Mathius D Fakhiri stated that he had ordered additional troops to Intan Jaya. The Regional Police Chief said that his party had coordinated with the TNI to get transportation equipment assistance, especially helicopters.

"They will strengthen security to anticipate further disturbances," Kapolda Fakhiri told reporters last Thursday.

The Kapolda explained that security strengthening would be sent from Timika and Jayapura, with the hope that helicopter assistance from the TNI could be available soon.

"We hope that there will be assistance from the TNI for the provision of the helicopter. Once the helicopter is available, the security forces will immediately move to Intan Jaya to overcome security disturbances in Sugapa City," added Kapolda Fakhiri.

In addition, the Kapolda also ordered the Intan Jaya Police Chief to maintain parameters from the location of the burning and shooting that occurred.

Kapolda Fakhiri strongly condemns the KKB action that burned educational facilities in Intan Jaya. He highlighted that this action could hinder the education and health of the Papuan people.

"Schools and health centers should not be burned. How can the Papuan people learn and be healthy if this facility is destroyed?" he asked.

Kapolda Fakhiri also asked Papuans in Intan Jaya to help support security forces in expelling KKB from the area, as well as avoiding violence or burning public facilities.

"I hope that residents do not provide support to the KKB in committing acts of violence. I believe the public may be intimidated, but they must reject these acts of violence," he stressed.

Previously, on Tuesday (30/4/2024), a civilian named Alexsander Parapak (20) was shot dead as a result of the KKB attack on the Homeyo Police. This case follows the burning of the Pogapa Inpres Elementary School building in Homeyo District which was carried out by KKB.
