President Biden Re-emphasizes the US Position Regarding the Attack on Rafah to PM Netanyahu

JAKARTA - The White House said that President Joe Biden on Sunday reaffirmed the United States' position regarding the possibility of an Israeli invasion of the city of Rafah, while speaking with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A statement issued by the White House did not provide further details about the talks. Washington says it cannot support the Rafah operation without a proper and credible humanitarian plan.

"The President reaffirmed his strong commitment to Israel's security," said the statement, reported by Reuters, April 29.

It further said that the two leaders reviewed talks designed to secure the release of several hostages held since the Hamas group's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, accompanied by an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Apart from that, they also discussed increasing the speed of aid delivery, including preparations to open new crossings to Gaza.

"The President emphasized the need for this progress to be maintained and enhanced in full coordination with humanitarian organizations," the statement said.

It is known that the two leaders last spoke on April 13, after Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Israel.

Speaking earlier, White House National Security Spokesman John Kirby said Israel had agreed to listen to US concerns and thoughts before launching an invasion.
