Earthquake Shakes Jabodetabek Saturday Night Triggered By Deformation In Garut Waters
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake with an updated parameter of 6.2 magnitudes centered in the southern waters of West Java triggered by deep rock deformation. "This earthquake was triggered by the presence of rock deformations in a subduction Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate in southern West Java or popularly referred to as an earthquake in a slab (intra-slab earthquake)," said Head of the BMKG Daryono Earthquake and Tsunami Center quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, April 28. On April 27, 2024, at 23.29 WIB, a tectonic earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean region south of West Java. The epicenter of the earthquake with a depth of 70 kilometers was located at coordinates 8.39 degrees south latitude and 107.11 degrees east longitude or precisely located at sea at a distance of 156 kilometers southwest of Garut Regency, West Java. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake had a thrust fault. The strong tectonic earthquake was felt in Tangerang, Jakarta, Bandung Malang, to Sleman. "The modeling results show that the earthquake was not potentially a tsunami," said Daryono. Based on BMKG monitoring results, aftershock activity has not yet been recorded until 23.55 WIB. BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and unaffected by issues that could not be justified.

The public is also advised to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake. "Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house," concluded Daryono.
