The cost of maintenance of new cars may not be very accurate because some brands such as BMW and Toyota offer free maintenance programs. Generally, new cars only require light maintenance such as oil change and tire rotation during the first few years. New car guarantees are usually at least 3 years, and repairs are covered by warranty.

CR analysis shows maintenance costs can spike high after the warranty period and free maintenance runs out. Knowing the average ownership costs of each brand can help save in the long term.
"Differences in the cost of inter-brand maintenance can reach millions of rupiah within a period of 10 years. In addition, the cost of maintenance luxury cars is usually also more expensive," said Steven Elek, lead automotive data analysis program Consumer Reports, in a release, quoted April 23.
According to CR, Tesla has the lowest maintenance costs for the first to fifth year. On the other hand, the German brand dominates the most expensive rankings, namely Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.
"If you want to buy a luxury car, consider an American brand that generally has lower maintenance and repair costs," Elek suggested.
"For example, the cost of maintenance and repair of Mercedes-Benz for 10 years could be twice that of Lincoln," he continued.
Understanding the difference in maintenance costs can help consumers budget for current cars and affect the next car purchase decision.
