KPUPR Claims IKN Development Can Reduce Carbon Emissions To 18 Percent

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) ensures that the development of the capital city of Nusantara (IKN) can reduce the footprint of carbon emissions in Indonesia.

The Director General of Housing at the Ministry of PUPR, Iwan Suprijanto, assessed that the construction of IKN could even reduce up to 18 percent of carbon emissions in the East Kalimantan (Kaltim) region.

"The transfer of the nation's capital can have an impact on reducing carbon emissions in East Kalimantan by 18 percent," said Iwan on the agenda of the Sustainable Urban Development Collaboration through the Strengthening of the Use of Environmentally Friendly Domestic Products online, Monday, April 22.

Iwan also ensured that the implementation of the smart city concept in IKN was also expected to serve as a guideline for IKN development to always implement sustainable construction. One of them is by using environmentally friendly construction materials.

This is because reducing the trace of carbon emissions in East Kalimantan can indirectly have an impact on changing the economic structure of the region in East Kalimantan.

"This (carbon emission cuts) can indirectly change the economic structure of the region, from the beginning which is more likely to natural source economy, namely economic dependence on natural resources to economic dependence on services and services," he said.

On the same occasion, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) as well as the Chairperson of the Task Force (Satgas) for the Implementation of IKN Infrastructure Development, Ministry of PUPR Danis H. Sumadilaga said that the discourse on moving the capital city was an important decision taken by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

He said, apart from being a solution to reducing the footprint of carbon emissions, IKN development is also claimed to be able to encourage the growth of new economic points outside Java.

"It is very important to move the capital city to East Kalimantan, not only to move the center of government, but as an economic center outside Java as a government effort to increase equitable development in Indonesia," he concluded.

For your information, the Ministry of PUPR reports that the physical progress of the basic infrastructure work for the capital city of Nusantara (IKN) phase 1 totaling 40 packages has reached 79.8 percent. Meanwhile, for the construction of phase 2 IKN, the progress is currently recorded to have reached 24 percent.
