Profile Of Lawrence Wong, Prospective Prime Minister To Be Inaugurated Next Month Replaces Lee Hsien Loong
YOGYAKARTA Lawrence Wong's profile is interesting to talk about. The reason is, he will replace Lee Hsien Loong who will step down from his position as Prime Minister of Singapore as of Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
PM Lee Hsien Loong himself appointed Lawrence Wong, who is his deputy as the new Prime Minister. Currently, Lawrence Wong's name has been submitted to Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Lawrence Wong, who is 51 years old, is Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Singapore. Before being in his current position, Lawrence Wong was actually just an ordinary civil servant who had no background in politics.
Lawrence Wong himself was born to an ordinary family. His father works as a sales manager at Sime Darby, while his mother is a teacher. Wong also has a older brother who is aerospace engineer at DSO Laboratories.
As a family living in the Marine Parade Housing Board area, Wong's educational background is not too flashy. He was in the PAP Community Foundation (PCF) kindergarten at Marine Parade and then continued elementary school in Haig Boys. At the school, the mother also underwent her profession as a teacher.
During his tenure, Wong was better known as a bookworm. He spent a lot of his time in the Marine Parade library. After graduating from Haig Boys, Wong continued to Tanjong Katong's Middle Engineering School. After that Wong continued his education at Victoria Junior College. Where Wong got a government scholarship to study in the United States.
Wong then earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan-Annelain in the economic field. In addition, Wong won a Public Administration Master's degree from Harvard Kennedy School.
After his education affairs were completed in America, Wong decided to return to Singapore. He pursues a career at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. At the ministry he carried out economic modeling.
Wong then got a promotion at the Ministry of Finance and Health. He also briefly became a private secretary (PPS) aka the main personal secretary for PM Lee Hsien Loong (2005-2008). After three years, Wong was appointed chief executive of the Energy Market Authority.
After about 14 years of Wong's career in public services. He finally entered politics. He decided to register in the General Election in 2011. With a tit for tat, Wong was elected as a member of parliament for the GRC West Coast. He has also been a member of parliament for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC since 2015.
