"Receiving news from the Riau Natural Resources Conversion Center (KSDA) informing that an elephant calf was born by a female elephant mother named Fuja and a male mother named Sarma," said KLHK Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) Satyawan Pudyatmoko in a statement in Jakarta, Monday, April 8.
The elephant calf was born to the 20-year-old mother Fuja and the 25-year-old male mother Sarma who came from the evacuation results due to animal snares in the Kampar Kiri area, Riau, in 2008.
The results of health checks and morphometric measurements from the elephant calf carried out by the Riau KSDA Center team showed the result that the newly born individual had a height of 75 cm.
In addition, the elephant calf has a chest circumference of 97 cm, body length 97 cm, weight 75.5 kg and is identified as female. The mother and calf are in good health and show normal vitality.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has confirmed that a team of veterinarians and animal medical nurses from the Riau KSDA Center will continue to monitor intensively the health condition of the mother and elephant calf, as reported by Antara.
Satyawan said that the elephant calf was born on the 27th day of Ramadan 1445 Hijri. Referring to this fact, he hopes that the newly born Sumatran elephant in the Ramadan atmosphere can be a light of goodness for the world of conservation.
