BSI: Most Company Profits Will Be Reused For Zakat

JAKARTA - Deputy President Director of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI) Bob T. Ananta said that most of the profits achieved by the company will be used again for the benefit of the community through the distribution of corporate zakat.

"When there was a public expose here (the head office) there was a question about netizen comments, 'Why are the benefits big'. In fact, apart from this advantage to show that this bank is professional, but this advantage will also be rushed to a wider community," said Bob in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Tuesday, April 2.

Throughout 2023, BSI posted a net profit of IDR 5.7 trillion or grew 33.88 percent on an annual basis (yoy). According to BSI, the profitability growth supports the company's zakat growth.

Bob noted that BSI had handed over corporate zakat through the National Amil Zakat Agency (Baznas) amounting to Rp223 billion this year. This number increased by 29 percent when compared to 2023 amounting to Rp173 billion.

In addition to corporate zakat, Bob said that BSI's profitability growth also contributed taxes to Indonesia. This also shows that BSI is not only profit-oriented, but also considers benefits for the community.

"In addition to being a business unit, we also deposit taxes and this is BSI's tax contribution to the government. The figure continues to increase (from year to year), the last (2023) is IDR 169 billion," said Bob.

Bob said that BSI has also adhered to the principles of sharia maqashid through the implementation of ESG (environment, social, and governance) in the form of sustainable financing distribution, especially for the MSME sector.

BSI's ongoing financing in 2023 reached a total of IDR 57.7 trillion, dominated by distribution to the MSME sector of IDR 45.4 trillion, followed by sustainable agriculture of IDR 4.8 trillion, eco-efficient products of IDR 5.8 trillion, renewable energy of IDR 1.1 trillion, and eco-green projects of IDR 549.6 billion.

"This means that, yes, BSI is maqashid sharia oriented towards 3P (people, planets, and profit), this is an ESG principle. And there also BSI fosters sustainable growth traces," said Bob.
