Indra Sjafri Has Not Determined The U-20 Indonesian National Team Core Squad

JAKARTA The U-20 Indonesian national team coach, Indra Sjafri, has not yet determined the core squad even though he has undergone two test matches against China U-20.

Garuda Muda twice drew 1-1 against China U-20 in trials at the Madya Stadium, Jakarta, March 22 and 25, 2024.

"The name is the youth team, there are still many shortcomings. I can't detail one by one. Moreover, this team has just processed. Who is the 11 (core players) are still dismantling," said Indra Sjafri.

Indra further explained that two test matches with China U-20 were held so that the coaching team could see the progress of the players. So, it's not just to determine who the first players are.

The coach said he and the coaching team were also still collecting data on players of Indonesian descent who were playing abroad.

"The U-20 Indonesian national team, we need four players (for each outfield player position). That means, there are 40 players plus six goalkeepers." So, those 40 players are now being sought from several selections, from several existing sources," he said.

However, he did not close the door at all for academy students or local football schools.

"The first priority is an Indonesian passport. Second, it doesn't have an Indonesian passport, but it's special."

"We will recommend and he really wants it, yes, we will welcome it. The point is we will find all the best players there is."

"Four players in each position, plus six goalkeepers. In total, there are 46 players," said Indra Sjafri.

The U-20 Indonesian national team is prepared to participate in the 2024 AFF U-19 Cup in July 2024. Indonesia is rumored to be hosting the event.

In addition, Garuda Muda was also formed to face the 2025 U-20 Asian Cup Qualification. They are expected to qualify for the 2025 U-20 World Cup which will take place in Chile.
