Mount Semeru Erupts 3 Times In Three Hours

Mount Semeru, which is located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies, East Java, erupted three times on Saturday morning in three hours.

The first eruption occurred at 05.44 WIB, then the second eruption occurred at 07.28 WIB and the third at 08.07 WIB, so far there were three eruptions.

"There was an eruption of Mount Semeru on March 23, 2024, at 05.44 WIB with an eruptive column height of about 600 meters above the peak (4,276 meters above sea level)," said Mount Semeru Observation Post officer Ghufron Alwi in a written report reported by ANTARA, Saturday, March 23.

The volcanic ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity to the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 112 seconds.

Then in the second eruption occurred at 07.28 WIB with an eruptive column height accompanied by volcanic ash observed about 700 meters above the peak (4.376 m above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity to the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 20 mm and a duration of 75 seconds.

Meanwhile, officers from the Mount Semeru Observation Post, Sigit Rian Alfian, also reported the occurrence of the highest mountain eruption on the island of Java at 08:07 WIB and the eruption was higher than the first and second eruptions.

"The height of the eruption column was observed to be about 1,000 meters or 1 kilometer above the peak (4,676 meters above sea level)," he said.

The volcanic ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity to the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 mm and a duration of 73 seconds.

As of Saturday afternoon at 12.00 WIB, the number of eruptions of Mount Semeru was recorded from January 1 to March 23, 2024, in a report from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources through the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
