KPU Concerning Discourse On The Acceleration Of Regional Head Elections: It's A Domain For Making Laws

JAKARTA - Member of the General Election Commission (KPU) Idham Holik assessed that the proposal to accelerate the schedule for the 2024 Regional Head Election (Pilkada) is a domain of the DPR and the government as legislators (UU).

"Regarding the planned promotion of national simultaneous elections, it is the domain of the legislators," said Idham as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, March 1.

He emphasized that the KPU does not have the capacity to speak in this order. The KPU is also focusing on streamlining the implementation of the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada stages.

Previously, member of Commission II of the DPR Guspardi Gaus stated that there had been no change in the schedule for regional head elections or regional elections in 2024, which will be held in November 2024.

"Until now, there has been no change in the schedule for the election from November to September 2024," said Guspardi in his statement in Jakarta, Thursday.

It is known that the DPR has approved the revision of the Pilkada Law as a Draft Law (RUU) proposed by the DPR, in a plenary meeting some time ago.

The bill on the fourth amendment to Law Number 1 of 2015 concerning regional elections, the DPR proposes the acceleration of the 2024 Pilkada. The Pilkada, which was originally scheduled to be held in November, was proposed to be moved forward to September 2024.

"If you want to make a law, it can't be just the DPR, but there must also be a government. The government without a DPR can't. So, it means you can't applaud," he said.

He said that if the government does not send a presidential letter (Surpres) and a problem inventory list (DIM) related to the Pilkada Bill, it is likely that the schedule for the regional elections will not change.

Article 201 paragraph 8 of Law Number 10 of 2016 concerning the Second Amendment to Law Number 1 of 2015 concerning Stipulation of Government Regulations in Lieu of Law Number 1 of 2014 concerning the Election of Governors, Regents, and Mayors into Law reads, "National simultaneous voting in the Election of Governors and Deputy Governors, Regents and Deputy Regents, as well as Mayors and Deputy Mayors throughout the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia will be held in November 2024".
