Mount Ili Lewotolok Eruption, Lontaran Abu Up To 1,000 Meters

JAKARTA - Mount Ili Lewotolok, located on Lembata Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province, experienced an eruption and ejected volcanic ash about one kilometer above the peak of the volcano.

Mount Ili Lewotolok Observation Post officer Fajaruddin Balido said the eruption occurred tonight at 21.20 WITA with a maximum amplitude of 34.8 millimeters and a duration of 71 seconds.

"The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity to the east," Fajaruddin said in a report quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, February 27.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) revealed that the activity of Mount Ili Lewotolok is currently experiencing an increase, so that the status has been raised from level II or alert to level III or standby.

On February 16-26, 2024, PVMBG recorded a large number of gusts reaching 3,615 times in just ten days.

Then, the number of earthquake eruptions was recorded at 98 times, earthquake avalanches 30 times, earthquake non harmonic tremor 98 times, hybrid earthquake 54 times, shallow volcanic earthquake 4 times, volcanic earthquake 5 times, tremor earthquake decreased 1 time, local tectonic earthquake 4 times, and long tectonic earthquake 3 times.
