South Korean Women's Group Urges President To Appoint New Gender Equality Minister
JAKARTA - The women's group association in South Korea has asked for the appointment of a new minister of gender equality. They also urged President Yoon Suk Yeol to abolish ministries dedicated to promoting gender equality.The 902 women's group alliance, including Korea Women's Hot Line and Womenlink, blamed Yoon's government for shaking the gender ministry to strengthen its stance in the face of a two-year political crisis in his term of office.This year the ministry's budget to protect women from violence and support victims was cut by 12 billion won (around Rp140 billion), significantly loosening the ministry's role which exclusively serves to meet gender equality,” said the civil society group at a press conference held in front of the presidential office in Seoul. reported by Yonhap via Antara, Friday, February 23.The women group claims that the gender ministry is being abused as a political rhetoric in supporting the ministry's abolition.While “reality of sexual discrimination has been distorted and mitigated, and vulnerable class life has become more difficult,” according to their claims.The civil society group urged the government to stop non-stop efforts to abolish the gender ministry.
