History Of GP Ansor: The Beginning Of Its Establishment And Its Visions

YOGYAKARTA - The Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) has become one of the well-known community organizations in Indonesia. This mass organization is an autonomous body under the auspices of the Nahdlatul Ulama organization. So what is the history of GP Ansor and his duties or roles like?

GP Ansor is a youth, community and religious movement with populist character. The development of GP Ansor has spread to various regions in Indonesia. So far, there have been 433 GP Ansor Branches (district/city level) under the coordination of 32 Regional Management (Provincial Level) to the village level.

The establishment of GP Ansor is synonymous with the spirit of struggle, nationalism, liberation, and heroism. The history of GP Ansor and the purpose of forming this mass organization are interesting to know further.

GP Ansor was founded on April 24, 1934 or 10 Muharram 1353 Hijri in Banyuwangi, East Java. Reporting from the NU Online page, the formation of GP Ansor is the result of the decision of the 9th NU Congress which will be held on April 21-April 26 that year.

The idea of forming an Ansor GP cannot be separated from the figure of KH Abdul Wahab Chasbullah. In the early 1920s, KH Abdul Wahab had already established the youth wing of Nahdlatul Wathan, namely Syubbanul Wathan led by Abdullah Ubaid, Da'watus Syubban led by Thohir Bakri, and Jam'iyyah Nashihin (the youth group participating in the course) fostered by Kiai Wahab.

However, two years before the 9th NU Congress, namely in 1932, the three youth organizations were merged into a new forum called the Nahdlatul Ulama Youth Association (PPNU). This forum then underwent a change in name to Nahdlatul Ulama Youth (PNU).

It was only at the 9th NU Congress, Thohir Bakri fought for official recognition for PNU as a forum for NU youth. After making various approaches to elderly kiai, at the 9th NU Congress in Banyuwangi in 1934, Nahdlatul Ulama Youth (PNU) was designated as an organization that became home to youth and became one of the wings of NU.

Ansor appeared in response to the internal conflict between traditional figures and modernist figures within Nahdlatul Wathan, religious organizations engaged in Islamic education, Muslim development, and cadre development.

KH Abdul Wahab Hasblah and KH Mas Mansyur, who have a modernist view, finally followed the flow of different movements when the spirit to establish an Islamic youth organization grew. Two years after the split, namely in 1924, the youth who supported KH Abdul Wahab (who later became the founder of NU) formed a forum called Syubbanul Wathan (Inland Youth). This organization became the forerunner of the Ansor Youth Movement after experiencing several names changes, such as the NU Youth Association (PPNU), NU Youth Association (PNU), and Anshoru Nahdlatul Oelama (ANO).

GP Ansor became a mass organization that brought vision, mission, and goals to form intelligent, stratified, and patriotic youths. The following is the vision and mission of GP Ansor as quoted from the ansor.id page:
