Apple Fails To Create Its Own Modem, Partnership With Qualcomm Extended

JAKARTA Last year, Apple announced that it will use Qualcomm's 5G modem until 2026. However, Apple recently changed its partnership period with Qualcomm.

CEOQualcommCristiano Amon announced that his company will continue to cooperate with Apple until March 2027. This statement was made through a fiscal 2024 report in the first quarter, quoted via CNBC.

Amon admits that this cooperation will initially end in 2026. However, Apple and Qualcomm continued to discuss the cooperation until the Vision Pro developer finally agreed to extend the patent license.

In fact, this news is not so surprising that Apple has been trying to modem for years. It seems that the company has failed to develop a more capable modem and can outperform Qualcomm.

Based on a Briomberg report late last year, the company's engineers and executives were frustrated by the development of their modem which never came to fruition. The prototype of this modem still doesn't have an efficient performance.

So far, Apple is using Qualcomm's internal 5G modem to support satellite communications on the iPhone 14 and 15 series. With this modem support, users can get help in emergency conditions using Emergency SOS.

This feature will support calls beyond the cellular reach. When a user uses Emergency SOS mode, the device will try to connect with a cell tower. If this linking business fails, Qualcomm's modem will support message delivery.
