JAKARTA - India's financial crime agency has arrested a prominent opposition leader, Hemant Soren hours after he resigned from the post of chairman of state minister Jharkhand.Hemant Soren comes from the party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). The case against Soren relates to a plot of land it allegedly owns in the city of Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand.ED claims he bought the property through "the proceeds of crime" by illegally selling land belonging to the Indian army. Soren denied the allegations and claimed that the property was "allegedly owned wrongly" by him.ED officials reportedly sent several calls to Soren but he refused to come for questioning.On Monday, officials reached Soren's residence in the capital Delhi but found him "lost". The agency said it seized 3.6 million rupees (Rp683 million more as well as a car from the house. A day later, Soren appeared in Ranchi and said he would make a statement before the agency on Wednesday.The curfew was imposed within a 100 meter radius of the residence of the chief minister and ED office in Ranchi on Wednesday evening. Hours later, Soren submitted his resignation, after which the faithful Champa Soren was announced as the next minister's chairman. Hemant Soren was arrested late at night.JMM calls the investigation of Soren a politically motivated "witch hunt".The party accused the federal government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using central agencies to target opposition leaders ahead of the general election. BJP, meanwhile, denies allegations of political interference.India's main opposition Congress Party also condemned Soren's arrest, calling it a "hit against federalism". JMM is part of INDIA, a coalition of opposition parties led by Congress seeking to confront the ruling National Democratic Alliance of BJP-led elections."BJP, which is investigating corruption, is running a campaign to destroy democracy," wrote Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi on X (formerly Twitter).Several heads of ministers and other opposition leaders face corruption charges.In November, ED summoned Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with a case related to a liquor policy that has now been canceled in the state. His party leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh have been arrested in the case.
ED is also investigating allegations of money laundering against key ministers in three southern-Southern states, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. All leaders have denied accusations against them.
