Troubled ECU Program, TAM Recalls BZ4x Model In Indonesia

PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM), as the sole agent holding the Toyota car brand in Indonesia, announced that it will carry out a recall program for the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) model, namely bZ4x for the production year March 2022 to June 2023.

The cause of the recall in the model is because Toyota wants to correct an error in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) program and reprogram this component. It is known, the ECU functions in controlling all important vehicle information on the Combination Meter.

"We will carry out checks and reprogramming in the form of software updates on the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controlling the Combination Meter which functions to display all important information on vehicles in the form of Multi Information Display (MID)," said Henry Tanoto, vice president director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM), in his statement at VOI, Monday, January 29.

This electric-powered crossover is equipped with an ECU-controlled Combination Meter System, in which there is various information in it, such as indicator lights, vehicle gauges or battery or electric motor performance, travel distance, and other information displayed in Multi Information Display (MID) and sent to Data Communication Module (DCM).

Then, DCM connects with the ECU on the Combination Meter to check the status of the vehicle within a certain period of time after the ignition key is turned off. If communication between DCM and ECU occurs when the ECU runs a specific process, there is an ECU potential not to complete the process under construction.

When this happens, the MID display will be blank or empty after the new key cycle, which then does not have a specific indicator display. Because the ECU also interacts with other features such as the pointing, hazard lights, and the Pre-Collition System on Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the function will be inactive on its own.

Of course this will affect the safety of vehicle users. If a car with this condition is still forced to run, it will increase the risk of an accident.

The ATPM urges vehicle owners to take their vehicles to the nearest Toyota authorized dealer network to carry out a reprogramming process on their software, so that the system can function as usual.
