Matt Ebden/Rohan Bopanna's Persistence With Australian Open 2024 Men's Doubles Champion

JAKARTA - Matt Ebden (Australia) and Rohan Bopanna (India) successfully won the Grand Slam Australian Open 2024 title.

The second seed defeated the Italian pair, Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavossori, in the final match at the Rod Laver Arena, Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Ebden/Bopanna won with a tight score of 7-6 (0) and 7-5 to secure their first Grand Slam title when they were paired. The final match was fierce for 99 minutes.

For 36-year-old Ebden, this title is his third Grand Slam trophy in his career. He completed a mixed doubles title at the 2013 Australian Open and the men's doubles Wimbledon 2022.

As for Boppana, his second Grand Slam trophy was after his win at the 2017 Roland Garros mixed doubles.

The 43-year-old equaled his compatriot, Leander Paes, in his most appearance at the Australian Open. He collected 17 appearances before winning his first men's doubles title.

Ebden is in second place to appear 15 times at home. Ebden's previous best result at Melbourne Park was finishing runners-up with his compatriot, Max Tracell, in the 2022 edition.

The tennis player who was born in Perth became the 28th Australian player to win the Australian Open men's doubles title since changing names from the Australian Championships in 1969.

Ebden became Australia's sixth active player to achieve this feat, after John Pees (with Henri Kontinent from Finland in 2017), Thanation Kokkinakis/Nick Kyrgios (2022), and Rinky Hijikata/Jason Kubler (2023).

The record also marks the first time in 30 years that Australian players have won three Australian Open men's doubles titles in a row.

Currently, Ebden is ranked the highest in his career, which is the fourth position. He is ready to move up to second in the world.

Meanwhile, Bopanna, who is now ranked third in the world, will skyrocket to the top of the ATP Tour doubles next week. This makes him the world's first-ranked player the oldest in history.
