Record, Indonesian Coal Production Reaches 775 Million Tons In 2023

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded a domestic coal production record that exceeded the 2023 target.

It was recorded that coal production in 2023 was 775 million tons, far beyond the targeted target of 695 million tons.

"So our production, for the realization in 2023, reaches 775 million tons and for domestic needs (DMO) we can meet the needs of 213 million tons and then also export 518 million tons," said ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif, quoted on Tuesday, January 16.

Arifin added that there was an increase in the use of domestic coal from the 2023 target of 177 million tons.

This is due to more coal demand, due to the addition of new Steam Power Plants (PLTU) from the 35 GW projects being completed.

"The second cause is because other alternative energy supplies are slightly disrupted in supply," said Arifin.

Indonesia's coal production has continued to increase since 2020, where in that year its production was 564 million tons with DMO of 132 million tons and exports of 405 million tons.

For 2021, coal production will reach 614 million tons, with DMO of 133 million tons and exports of 435 million tons.

In 2022, Indonesia's coal production will again increase at 687 million tons, with a supply of 216 million tons of DMO and for exports reaching 465 million tons. Meanwhile, by 2024, the government has set a coal production target of 710 million tons.
