Australian Open 2024: Daniil Medvedev And Coco Gauff Win
JAKARTA Daniil Medvedev qualified for the second round of the Australian Open 2024 after his opponent, Terence Atmane, could not continue the match due to cramps.
Medvedev, who was runner-up at the 2021 and 2022 Australian Opens, lost in the first 5-7 before winning in the following two sets 6-2 and 6-4. He was in the middle of a 1-0 lead when his opponent had to step down.
"I often experience cramps like that. If he plays like this, he can do big things," Medvedev was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
The weather in Melbourne was hot on the second day of the match compared to the past week. The temperature off the pitch reaches 27 degrees Celsius, even hotter when there is sunlight.
Atmane has begun to appear to experience cramps in the third set. He had decided to continue the match, but finally gave up when he was left behind in the fourth set.

The 22-year-old Frenchman looks almost crying when he shakes hands with Medvedev. He then vented his emotions while hiding his head behind the towel after that.
"This is a brutal condition. It's really brutal because it hasn't been this fierce for the last seven days here and now it's even hot," Medvedev said.
In another match, the ticket to the second half was also secured by Coco Gauff. The United States tennis player and last year's US Open champion qualified after defeating Slovak tennis player, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, two sets 6-3 and 6-0.
Unfortunately, last year's Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova, was immediately eliminated in the first half. The world number seven is the highest seed to be eliminated so far.
