Xiaomi Denies Presenting EREV Models Or Long-distance Electric Vehicles

JAKARTA - The existence of Xiaomi in the environmentally friendly car segment is still a hot topic of conversation, especially with the emergence of rumors that the company plans to launch a long-distance electric vehicle known as the Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) in the coming year.

EREV is a type of long-distance electric vehicle that uses recharged batteries as a power source. However, additional energy can be generated through a small internal combustion engine (ICE) to power generators that supply electric motors and/or recharge batteries. And the car can go up to an additional 200 km.

Quoted from the CNevpost page, Friday, January 12, these rumors also appeared in a 36kr local media report on October 5, stating that Xiaomi EV is developing the EREV as part of the company's plans.

Xiaomi will also reportedly continue to develop a multi-generational vehicle platform, with the first generation model scheduled to enter the market by 2024, while the second generation is planned for 2025.

In response to the rumors, Xiaomi clarified that they had no plans to launch the EREV model in the near future.

We are currently focusing on Xiaomi SU7, the first model on the Modena platform. We are determined to invest ten times and seriously build a good car. There is no current SU5, and no EV in the future," the statement read.

While the EREV segment is growing in the Chinese market, with manufacturers like Li Auto setting record shipments of 50,353 vehicles in December and 376,030 throughout 2023, as well as EV startups such as Leapmotor and Neta offering EREV models.

For additional information, Xiaomi recently introduced an electric sedan called SU7. Although some of the specifications have been announced after its debut late last year, prices are still a mystery and are expected to be disclosed at Beijing's automotive exhibition which takes place between April 24 and May 4, 2024.
