Minangkabau International Airport Temporarily Closes The Impact Of Volcanic Ash Marapi
PT Angkasa Pura II Executive General Manager (EGM) Minangkabau International Airport (BIM), Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra Province (West Sumatra) Indrawansyah confirmed that the airport was temporarily closed due to the spread of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Marapi.
"Yes, that's right, all flights or BIM operations have begun to be temporarily closed today starting at 10.45 WIB," said Indrawansyah, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, January 5.
Indrawansyah said the BIM was closed to avoid the worst possibility, including disruption of flights due to the eruption of Mount Marapi in Tanah Datar Regency and Agam Regency.
Given that Marapi's eruption is still happening, Indrawansyah said he could not confirm how long the airport would be closed. However, every 30 minutes after the airport close, the condition of the spread of volcanic ash will continue to be monitored.
"We will continue to evaluate it every 30 minutes. But for how long we don't know because the weather conditions are also unclear," he said.
Currently, BIM and other relevant stakeholders are coordinating regarding the impact of the spread of volcanic ash.

The closure of the BIM could change or depend on the conditions of the distribution of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Marapi. In addition, the airport will also continue to coordinate with the BMKG regarding the recommendations issued.
The BIM closure is the second time after previously the airport was also closed on Friday (22/12/2023) due to the spread of volcanic ash. At that time the airport authorities closed BIM 16.00 WIB to 22.00 WIB.
