BPS Estimates Rice Production For Consumption Down 2.05 Percent In 2023

JAKARTA - Based on data from the Executive Summary of the Rice Panen Area in Indonesia 2023, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) estimates that Indonesia's rice production will decrease by 2.05 percent by the end of the year.

Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said that if rice production is converted into rice for population food consumption, rice production from January to September 2023 is estimated to be equivalent to 26.11 million tons of rice or a decrease of 58.56 thousand tons of rice. This figure is down 0.22 percent when compared to January to September 2022 which amounted to 26.17 million tons of rice.

Meanwhile, the potential for rice production from October to December 2023 is 4.78 million tons of rice. Thus, the total rice production in 2023 is estimated to be around 30.90 million tons of rice or a decrease of 645.09 thousand tons of rice. This figure is 2.05 percent of the turu compared to rice production in 2022 which is 31.54 million tons of rice.

Meanwhile, the highest rice production in 2023 occurred in March, amounting to 5.13 million tons of rice. Meanwhile, the lowest rice production is expected to occur in December, which is 1.11 million tons of rice.

"This condition is similar to 2022, where the highest rice production occurred in March and the lowest rice production occurred in December," Amalia said, quoted Wednesday, December 27.

Amalia explained that the harvest and production area in 2022 is a fixed figure. Meanwhile, the rice and rice production figures in 2023 are temporary figures because they still contain potential harvest areas from October to December.

Rice production is obtained from the product between the harvest area (clean) and productivity. The harvest area of rice plants on the rice fields is corrected by the amount of the conversion of canned rice. Meanwhile, for the harvest area of rice plants in the land, not rice fields, the length of the barn is considered not to be there (not corrected by the amount of the conversion of the bank).

Rice production is obtained from conversion of rice production into rice using a gabak conversion rate to rice and considering the proportion of unhulled rice/rice and for non-food use. Rice and rice production is calculated at the district/city level.

Based on the Area Sample Framework Survey (KSA), the peak of rice harvest in 2023 occurred in March with a harvest area of 1.65 million hectares. However, the peak of rice harvest in March 2023 was relatively lower or decreased by around 110.39 thousand hectares. This figure is down 6.27 percent compared to March 2022.

In the period January to September 2023, the realization of the harvest was recorded at 8.66 million hectares or decreased by around 33.04 thousand hectares compared to the same period in 2022 which reached 8.69 million hectares. Meanwhile, the potential for a rice harvest area from October to December 2023 reached 1.54 million hectares.

Thus, the total rice harvest area in 2023 is estimated at 10.20 million hectares or a decrease of around 255.79 thousand hectares. This figure is down 2.45 percent compared to the rice harvest area in 2022 which is 10.45 million hectares.

Meanwhile, rice production in Indonesia from January to September 2023 is estimated at 45.33 million tons of milled dry unhulled rice (GKG) or decreased by around 105.09 thousand tons of GKG. This figure is down 0.23 percent compared to January to September 2022 which amounted to 45.43 million tons of GKG.

Meanwhile, based on the average rice growth phase resulting from the September 2023 Area Sample Framework (KSA) survey, the potential for rice production from October to December 2023 is 8.30 million tons of GKG.

Thus, the total rice production in 2023 is estimated at 53.63 million tons of GKG or decreased by 1.12 million tons of GKG. This figure is down 2.05 percent compared to 2022 which is 54.75 million tons of GKG.

The highest rice production in 2022 and 2023 occurred in March, while the lowest rice production in 2023 is expected to occur in December. Rice production in March 2023 was 8.92 million tons GKG, while rice production in December 2023 was estimated at 1.93 million tons of GKG.

On the other hand, the three provinces with the highest total rice production (GKG) in 2023 are East Java, West Java, and Central Java. Meanwhile, the three provinces with the lowest rice production are the Provinces of the Riau Islands, DKI Jakarta, and West Papua.

The large decline in rice production in 2023 occurred in several areas of rice production centers such as South Sulawesi, West Java, and Central Java. On the other hand, there are several provinces that experienced a large increase in rice production, for example West Nusa Tenggara, West Sumatra, and Central Sulawesi.
