PSDKP Ambon Evacuates Sperm Whale Stranded On Hatu Beach, Central Mall
AMBON - Ambon Maritime and Fisheries Resources Protection Station (PSDKP) evacuates sperm whale (Physeter Macrocephalus) stranded on the Coast of Tasena Hamlet, Hatu Village, West Leihitu, Central Maluku Regency, Maluku.
The head of the Ambon PSDKP Station, Martin Yermias Luhulima, said the first handling was identifying whales and making measurements while coordinating with the Hatu State Government Staff.
"The team is also coordinating with several relevant agencies to help evacuate the whale," Martin said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, December 20.
Initially the team received a report via Bere, the people of Hatu Country regarding the presence of whales stranded on the coast of Tasena Hamlet, Hatu Village, which was found by the community.
Furthermore, the Ambon PSDKP Station Team and a team from the Maluku BKSDA, LOKA Pemelola Sumberdaya Pesisir and Laut (LPSPL) Ambon Satker, and the Maluku Province Maritime and Fisheries Service (DKP) conducted a survey of the location of the stranding of the Sperma Whale.
The Sperma whale that was stranded dead with a length of 9 meters, female gender, estimated age of still child, estimated death on Sunday 17 December 2023, conditions when found to be in code 2 to 3 or still fresh based on analysis from LPSPL Ambon, "he explained.

After the team negotiated and coordinated with the village government, a decision was taken on the process of handling whales by pulling them to be drowned into the middle of the sea.
The withdrawal was carried out by the team using the Garopa Ship and the Seram Sea Ship belonging to the Maluku DKP and assisted by the people of the Hatu Country.
"The team together with the community made a withdrawal of whales that had been wrapped using a net that was weighted to a depth of 540 meters with coordinates S 3045'46.58" E 128002'28.27", he said.
