NASA's Kennedy Space Changes The Name Of The First ISS Component Maker Facility

JAKARTA TheSpace Station Processing Facility (SSPF) is one of the important facilities built at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), the launch center of the United States Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA).

All vehicles that will be launched to International Space Station (ISS) must enter this room first to be examined for components. As the last examination room for all components, KSC is aware of the importance of this facility.

Therefore, KSC officials decided to change the name of the facility fromSpace Station Processing Facility toSpace Systems Processing Facility. Even though what was changed was only the word Station, this new name was still considered a form of respect.

"This name change reflects the extraordinary evolution into a dynamic multi-user processing environment after the central transformation became the country's main spaceport," said NASA's KSC Director, Janet Petro.

SSPF has been around for 25 years. This facility was originally built just to assemble and process components from the Node-1, the first ISS component the United States created. After the success of the first mission, the SSPF began to be used to create other components.

Currently, the SSPF is being used to work on components to be used on the Artemis mission. In addition, several commercial companies such as Northrop Grumman, Sierra Space, and SpaceX are also producing payloads and hardware at the facility.

Seeing the importance of this facility, SSPF will switch from government facilities to commercial. In the near future, several areas in the SSPF will be used specifically for the benefit of commercial companies.
