TIMIKA - Chairman of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) Puan Maharani hopes that the construction of the Gresik smelter owned by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) can be completed in 2024.

The chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives together with his entourage made a working visit to the mining area of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province and saw several vital areas of PTFI mining, Sunday.

"The DPR RI hopes that the Gresik smelter can be completed in May 2024, and PTFI continues to empower indigenous Papuans," he said.

According to Puan, through the construction of the first smelter in Gresik, there will be many big things that can be done from before, but also related to divestment commitments.

"Divestation is a commitment that must continue to be discussed between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and PTFI," he said.

He explained that matters related to indigenous Papuans are also a commitment that must be carried out as well as possible by PTFI.

"So far, PTFI has contributed greatly to the people in Papua through empowerment programs, and we hope that mineral resources will be very large and then have to be useful for Indonesia," he said again.

He added that he and the Minister of Energy Mineral Resources (ESDM) and a group of members of the Indonesian House of Representatives visited the PTFI mining location in Tembagapura from 9-10 December 2023.
