Reasons For Registration Of Presidential And Vice Presidential Candidates To Be Advanced, Central Schedule Changes Designed By KPU

YOGYAKARTA - The General Election Commission (KPU) plans to accelerate the registration of Presidential Candidates and Vice Presidential Candidates for next year's presidential election to 10-16 October 2023. This step also raises questions from the public who are looking forward to holding elections. Then what is the reason for the registration of presidential and vice presidential candidates in 2024?

Previously, registration of presidential and vice presidential candidates was scheduled for October 19 to November 25, 2023. The change plan is being drafted in the draft KPU Regulation (PKPU) which refers to Law Number 7 of 2023. The law, before revision, regulates the campaign period for the presidential and legislative elections starting three days after the determination of the candidate. Then the campaign period according to the law is carried out for 75 days.

"But in Law 7/2023, there is a different start. For the legislative campaign to 25 days after DCT (fixed candidate list) and for the president it becomes 15 days after DCT," said Hasyim Asy'ari in a written statement on Friday (8/9). ).

The chairman of the KPU, Hasyim Asy'ari, has provided the reason for the registration of the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates.

Hasyim Asy'ari said that if there was no change in the registration schedule, the voting for the Presidential Election and Legislative Election would be different. Because the campaign time in the presidential and legislative elections is different in Law 7 of 2023.

Actually, there are several options for changing the registration schedule for presidential and vice presidential candidates, according to Hasyim Asy'ari. However, the KPU must pay attention to the time window for stages which are strictly regulated in the Election Law.

From this, the option of advancing the registration of Presidential Candidates and Vice Presidential Candidates was chosen from 19 October-25 November to 10-16 October. Hasyim said that the take step had been carefully taken into account. The choice of date is called the most reasonable and allows technical implementation.

"By considering the regulation of Article 276 of the Election Law, the framework of stages and times in articles 230 to 238 of the Election Law and also with the most reasonable and possible technical considerations, the choice is appropriate," said Hasyim Asy'ari.

Mahfud MD, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, said that the 2024 General Election could be disrupted if the registration schedule for presidential and vice-presidential candidates was not advanced. Mahfud also said that there were concerns that the registration schedule that had been previously set would interfere with the election scheduled to be held on February 14, 2024.

"If it is not advanced, it will affect the stages of the election. Elections can be disrupted if they are not advanced," said Mahfud MD at the Presidential Palace Complex on Monday (11/9).

Mahfud assessed that the schedule change was also quite possible for prospective presidential and vice-presidential candidates for registration, examination, and determination of candidates. In addition, according to Mahfud MD, the choice of advancing the registration of presidential and vice-presidential candidates is also useful so that political dynamics is not too hot.
