Papa Roach's Sweet Emotions One Of The Worst Covers Of All Time? This Is What Jacoby Shaddix Said
JAKARTA - In a new interview with Baltimore's 98 Rock radio station, Jacoby Shaddix reflected on Papa Roach's cover version of the classic song Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion.
They performed the song at the 2002 MTV tribute to legendary rockers, "mtvICON: Aerosmith".
"So MTV, in the past, asked us to come do this in honor of Aerosmith," recalled Jacoby.
"And what song is it? Sweet Emotion. They were like, 'We want you guys to bring Sweet Emotion'. And I just said, 'Let's do it'. But it's, like, big shoes to fill. We just hacked our way. It's bad. It's not good."
Asked if he and his bandmates at Papa Roach had the opportunity to talk to Aerosmith's personnel after the show, Jacoby said: "It's funny because our drummer at the time [Dave Buckner] finally married Mia [Tyler], one of [Steven] Tyler's daughter. And it's like the beginning of a relationship that happened in this place."
Looking back at Aerosmith's reaction to Papa Roach's song Sweet Emotion, Shaddix said: "I can say that it's like, 'Hmm, that's really hard'."
"We are young people playing games, like nu metal," he explained. "We're not like classic rockers, you know? So we did our best, but it wasn't good enough. It wasn't cool."

In the "mtvICON: Aerosmith" recording, Papa Roach guitarist Jerry totaled that he was nervous before appearing in front of Aerosmith.
"I'm usually not nervous," he told MTV at the time. "But covering up a song from a band is one thing, and covering it up as they listen to it is another thing."
In 2015, the Audioectica blog dubbed Papa Roach's Sweet Emotion cover as "one of the worst songs of a great song. Their Sweet Emotion version will forever be placed next to the AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long from Celine Dion's version," the blog post added.
