Online Gambling Industry Revenue Reaches IDR 1,457 Trillion, Rapid Growth Supported By Internet Expansion
JAKARTA - The online gambling industry has become one of the most developed sectors in the world, with revenue projections reaching US$95.05 billion (Rp1,457 trillion) in 2023. The growth of the online gambling industry is even expected to increase from year to year.
Revenue in the online gambling market is projected to continue to grow with an annual growth rate of 8.54% from 2023 to 2027. This means that this market has the potential to reach a volume of 131.90 billion US dollars (Rp2,022 trillion) by 2027.
This rapid growth was driven by various factors, including increased internet access, increasing the number of smartphone or gadget users, and playing comfort from home.
In 2023, according to Statista.com, it is estimated that there will be around 233.7 million online gambling users worldwide. Although this figure represents about 2.3% of the global population, projections show a significant increase with an expected user penetration rate of 2.9% by 2027.
This shows that online gambling has become increasingly popular entertainment around the world, including in Indonesia.
Average income per user (ARPU) in the online gambling industry is estimated at US$540 (Rp8.2 million). High APPU shows that online gambling players tend to spend more money in their gambling activities. This makes the industry even more attractive to operators and investors.
The Largest Revenue In The United States
In a global comparison, most of online gambling revenues are expected to be generated in the United States, with projections reaching 19.14 billion US dollars (Rp293.4 trillion) by 2023. This shows that the United States online gambling market is one of the largest in the world.
In 2023, Canada is expected to have the highest user penetration rate in the online gambling market, reaching 46.8%. This shows that online gambling is very popular in Canada and is an integral part of public entertainment.
A 2021 survey, published by Stasista.com, of internet users in various major online markets found that 14 percent of adults in the UK think that sports star celebrities and influencers are effective in promoting gambling products. In this comparison, eight percent of respondents in Poland think gambling influencers are effective.
Of course it is understandable, if there are several illegal online gambling agents in Indonesia, they also use celebrities and influencers to promote their products to the public amid the government's ban and restrictions on all forms of online gambling advertisements in the country.
The results of this survey reflect the public's view of the influence that well-known figures have in influencing gambling behavior. But keep in mind that this view can vary from state to state, depending on culture, gambling regulation, and other factors.
