JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) is completing the construction of flood control infrastructure and the tidal wave of the Loji River and Banger River in Pekalongan City, Central Java. This project is targeted for completion by the end of 2023.
This is because the coastal areas of Pekalongan City often face the potential for tidal flooding due to the tide of the North Java Sea.
The handling of floods and runoffs of the Pekalongan City tidal wave using a polder system with components including the construction of sea embankments, movement dams, increased embankments, construction of retention ponds, and installation of pump houses.
"Usually the polder is in the form of a pond, but because it is in residential areas and ponds, we make a long storage, which in the end we install a pump," said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono in a press release, quoted Wednesday, July 26.
The construction of flood control and tidal waves of the Loji River and Banger River is divided into three contractual packages. Package I includes the construction of retention ponds and ship mooring ponds, delegation areas, pump houses, movement dams, Loji River parapets, and gate regulator buildings.

In carrying out the work on the construction of flood control infrastructure and the tidal wave of the Loji River and the Banger River, the Ministry of PUPR always coordinates and synergizes with the Pekalongan City Government and the Central Java Provincial Government, especially in dealing with emerging social problems.
One of the challenges in this project is land acquisition in the construction of the Degayu Beach rob embankment and there are still four damaged ships in the work route of the Loji River parapet.
The construction of embankments on the coastal areas of Pekalongan City aims to dry up areas that have always been inundated by tidal waves, as well as separate the dry residential zones and the pond zones that are left inundated.
